The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton, welcomed their first child, on July 22, 2013. George was born at St. Mary's Hospital in London, and weighed a healthy 8 pounds, 6 ounces.
George's birth was a highly anticipated event because Middleton suffered from severe morning sickness and as a result made few public appearances and kept her pregnancy very private. The same would occur for the couple's next two children. George's birth announcement was posted on the traditional gilded easel outside of Buckingham Palace, but the Duke and Duchess decided to modernize their son's arrival by standing outside of the hospital to citizens could get a glimpse of the new family of three.
Two days later, George's full name was announced: His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge. His first name is an homage to his great-great-great grandfather King George V and his great-great Grandfather King George VI. It's believed the name Alexander is a nod to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, who was christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary. Louis is a tribute to his great-great uncle Louis Mountbatten, who is responsible for the marriage between Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, and was very close with William's father Charles.
